About Fuel Cost Calculator

Fuel Cost Calculator is a free online tool designed to help UK drivers estimate their fuel costs quickly and accurately. Whether you're planning a single journey, budgeting for your daily commute, or comparing petrol against diesel running costs, our calculator provides clear, instant results based on your specific vehicle and driving patterns.

    How It Works

Our calculator uses standard fuel consumption formulas to convert your inputs — distance, fuel efficiency (MPG or L/100km), and fuel price — into a cost estimate. The core calculation is: fuel used = distance ÷ fuel efficiency, then cost = fuel used × price per unit. For UK imperial calculations, we use the UK gallon (4.546 litres) as the standard unit.

We maintain a database of real-world MPG figures for popular UK car models, sourced from manufacturer specifications and adjusted based on typical real-world performance. Default fuel prices are based on UK national averages and updated regularly, though you can always enter your own current price for the most accurate results.

    Our Methodology

All calculations are performed using well-established mathematical formulas. We do not use proprietary algorithms or hidden adjustments. The formulas are transparent: if you know your MPG and fuel price, you can verify our results with a pocket calculator. Our vehicle MPG database is sourced from WLTP test data adjusted by a conservative real-world factor (typically 85-90% of the official figure) to provide more realistic estimates.

    Privacy

We take privacy seriously. All calculations happen entirely in your browser — your data never leaves your device. We don't require registration, don't store your inputs on any server, and don't sell data to third parties. The only data stored is your calculator inputs in your browser's localStorage, which you can clear at any time through your browser settings. We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used (page visits, not personal data) and display ads through Google AdSense to keep the tool free.

    Who We Are

FuelCostCalc is developed by a small, independent UK-based team passionate about creating useful, privacy-respecting digital tools for everyday drivers. We launched the calculator in response to rising fuel prices and the growing need for transparent, accessible financial planning tools for motorists. Our mission is to help UK drivers make more informed decisions about vehicle use — whether they’re comparing hybrid vs. diesel efficiency, planning a road trip, or simply trying to understand their monthly fuel spend. Unlike many similar tools, we’ve chosen to remain ad-supported but non-intrusive, avoiding paywalls, sign-ups, or data harvesting. This approach reflects our belief that practical financial tools should be freely available to all, without compromising user trust. As fuel efficiency becomes an increasingly important factor in vehicle choice and daily budgeting, we aim to keep FuelCostCalc accurate, up to date, and easy to use for everyone.

    Data Sources & Updates

To ensure our calculator remains both accurate and relevant, we maintain rigorous data-gathering practices. The MPG database draws from official WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure) figures, supplemented by real-world data from trusted UK motoring sources such as What Car?, The AA, and Motoring Research surveys. We update fuel price assumptions weekly using the latest data from the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the RAC Fuel Price Tracker, and our system flags when national averages have shifted significantly. For vehicles not listed in our default database, users can manually enter their vehicle’s official combined fuel consumption figure (in MPG or L/100km) to get precise estimates. We also periodically audit our conversion factors and assumptions to reflect changes in vehicle technology — for example, adjusting real-world correction factors for newer electric-hybrid vehicles where applicable. This transparency ensures our estimates remain as realistic as possible, even as fuel efficiency standards and vehicle types evolve.

    Future Developments

We’re continuously working to expand FuelCostCalc’s functionality to better serve the UK driving community. Planned enhancements include support for electric vehicle charging cost calculations (including public rapid vs. home charging rates), multi-stop route cost comparisons, and integration with real-time fuel price APIs for more precise local pricing. We’re also exploring features like carbon footprint estimation per journey, and the ability to save and compare multiple vehicle scenarios over time — all without compromising our core principle of privacy-first design. These additions reflect our commitment to evolving alongside changing transport trends, from the rise of EVs and PHEVs to increasing demand for sustainability-conscious travel planning. As always, user feedback will shape our roadmap, and we invite suggestions via our contact page.
